Entre gesto, material e superfície

Between gesture, material, and surface

Começo com uma tela em branco e deixo que o gesto surja — rabiscos impulsivos, às vezes com os olhos fechados, outras vezes guiada pela superfície. A partir daí, observo o que me interessa e começo a intervir com mais cor, destacando ou escondendo elementos. Uso pastel de óleo, que, especialmente na tela, deixa marcas irregulares e revela a textura do suporte. Essa relação entre material e superfície cria zonas de luz, sombra e relevo e acabo por brincar com esses momentos, construindo camadas entre o que se mostra e o que se oculta.

I begin with a blank canvas and let the gesture emerge — impulsive scribbles, sometimes with my eyes closed, other times guided by the surface. From there, I observe what interests me and start to intervene with more colour, highlighting or concealing elements. I use oil pastel, which, especially on canvas, leaves irregular marks and reveals the texture of the support. This relationship between material and surface creates zones of light, shadow and relief, and I end up playing with these moments, building layers between what is shown and what is hidden.

No meu trabalho atual, a pintura torna-se menos uma construção formal e mais um exercício incorporado — um espaço para ouvir e negociar entre gesto, material e superfície. Cada acção inicia um diálogo, não em direção a um resultado planeado, mas como uma resposta às exigências em evolução da superfície. O ato de pintar agora parece mais próximo de uma conversa: física, temporal e reflexiva. Essa mudança abriu espaço para tensão, imprevisibilidade e uma atenção mais profunda à presença, onde o próprio processo se torna tanto o assunto quanto a descoberta. É uma prática enraizada na intuição e na intimidade, que se desenrola momento a momento por meio de um envolvimento atento.

In my current work, painting becomes less of a formal construction and more of an embodied exercise — a space to listen and negotiate between gesture, material and surface. Each action initiates a dialogue, not towards a planned outcome, but as a response to the evolving demands of the surface. The act of painting now feels closer to a conversation: physical, temporal, and reflective. This shift has opened room for tension, unpredictability, and a deeper attention to presence, where the process itself becomes both the subject and the discovery. It is a practice rooted in intuition and intimacy, unfolding moment by moment through attentive engagement.
